British Newspaper Archive update

Added to the British Newspaper Archive (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk) in the last 30 days:

  • Belfast Morning News 1860
  • Chester Courant 1796, 1799, 1812, 1816
  • County Courts Chronicle 1852 - 1870
  • Grantham Journal 1891, 1894, 1899 - 1902, 1910, 1913
  • Hartlepool Mail 1879, 1886, 1894 - 1895
  • Hastings and St Leonards Observer 1912
  • Lichfield Mercury 1919, 1936, 1945, 1965
  • Maidstone Telegraph 1862 - 1871

It's interesting to see coverage for the Belfast Morning News stated to be from 1860-1880 in the main list of titles. In fact, at present, there are copies from 1860 and 1879-1880 only, so quite a long way to go on that front (or indeed any front for Ireland, still woefully left behind in the slow lane).

  1. Chris, I wanted to use the Hull Daily Mail and found out that the First World War issues did not appear despite being included in the years listed on the BNA site. I contacted customer services and got a standardised response stating that newspapers were still being digitised and that at some point the newspapers I wanted would be digitised. However within days the WW1 Hull Daily Mails appeared and unless it was a coincidence it looked to me like something had gone awry with the way the editions were uploaded (excluding them from search) and that the matter was quickly fixed. It may be a similar issue with the paper you are looking at.

  2. Quite possibly, but the track record on Irish offerings has been abysmal so far (the few Irish titles currently there are not even offered in the BNA access granted on FindmyPast)!

  3. I would be interested to know how they select the titles for digitisation (is there a schedule, sometimes it appears fairly random), plus why arent they digitising more Irish newspapers considering the massive demand for Irish family History. Have you ever thought about inviting managers/product development people from Ancestry or FindMyPast or one of the other blogs to do Q&As on this blog?
